Getting Started

If you are seriously considering installing an invisible dog fence on your property for control of your pets, you should know that you can have success with your product, if you choose a type of invisible pet fence that matches your dog’s personality.  A dog with stubborn tendencies or that is otherwise hard to train will need an appropriate and safe level of correctional voltage delivered through its shock collar while other dogs that are more timid will only need lower levels of a shock from the invisible fence to be effective.  The radio invisible dog fences are appropriate for easily trained dogs while the buried wire invisible dog fences can offer more customization of the correction levels and size of the home area.

The Radio Invisible Dog Fence

If you would like to use easy to install invisible dog fences, you may be interested in the radio invisible dog fence.  The radio invisible dog fence uses a radio signal that is broadcast from the center position of the area in which your pet is allowed to roam.  Your pet wears a shock prong collar that has a lightweight radio receiver embedded in it.

If your Pet Goes to the Edge of the Home Area

If your pet goes too close to the perimeter of the broadcast area, your pet, with receive a warning beep or other surprising audio signal that is meant to jolt the dog’s memory about their training exercises on boundary edges.

If your pet ignores the signal and continues out of the home area, the pet receives a shock through the small metal prongs that touch your pet’s skin underneath the collar.  Most dogs will understand that if they go near their boundaries edge that they receive a warning signal and shock that is enough for most dogs to stay at home.

Installation of a Radio Invisible Pet Fence

It does not take much to install a radio invisible dog fence.  Put the radio dog collar on your dog and make sure that the metal prongs make contact with the dog’s skin.  If necessary, you may have to trim or shave the dog’s hair so that the prongs can make contact with the dog’s skin.

It takes only a few minutes to put the collar on your dog and to plug in the invisible dog fence transmitter.  You will need to locate a 110-volt plug in outlet that is in an out of the way spot.  It will just sit there and take up space wherever it is plugged in and the transmitter can be easily managed out of view.  You will appreciate its placement in a closet or garage.  You can adjust the distance to the outer perimeter with which your dog is contained in its home area.  The outer perimeter is the edge that contains your dog’s movements with a warning signal and a shock correction mechanism.

The Buried Wire Style of Invisible Dog Fences

You may prefer invisible dog fences that offer a range of forty acres.  The buried wire invisible pet fence uses a small transmitter that delivers an electrical signal through a wire loop around your property.  You determine the size and layout of the wire loop.  The electrical signal will deliver a shock to your pet if the pet ignores the warning signal system that is similar to the radio invisible fence.  You can get correction levels that are adjustable with the buried wire system too.

Installation of the Buried Wired Invisible Dog Fence

The buried wire invisible pet fence uses 18-gauge wire.  You must receive from your utility company that location of any utility lines located on your property.  This way, you can avoid hitting the lines when you dig to bury the wire for the invisible fence.  Before you actually bury the wire, it is recommended that you conduct a test of the system above ground to ensure that it will work before it is buried.  If it works, you will then bury the wire to a depth of four to six inches so that it is deep enough that your dog can dig it up or it cannot be damaged through other activities.

Understand your Dog’s Personality

A few dogs will not take to invisible dog fences as well as other dogs.  These dogs can display some behaviors as a negative response to the electrical shock.  Timid dogs may be so frightened that the dog may refuse to leave their home territory as a way of avoiding the boundary.  In some rare cases, a dog may be too scared to go outside at all.  It also happens that some dogs are either not fearful or have a low threshold for pain or both and for this type of dog, it can be worth the shock to get away.  This same dog may also not consider it worth the shock to come back into their home area.  It is important that you go through the short training exercises so that your invisible dog fence will be a success.

Training your Pet with Invisible Dog Fences

Your invisible dog fence will come with training instructions and equipment.  In general, training for invisible pet fences means that you will use boundary markers and training exercises to teach your dog about the boundary and what will happen when the dog goes too close to that area.  It also teaches your dog about its home area in a safe and controlled way.  By training your pet, you can avoid negative reactions to the shock effect.

Any time that you need to add a new dog to the containment area, all you have to do is put another collar on the new dog and go through the training again with your pet.  It does not take long to set up the boundary markers for the training exercises and with the few training exercises; your dog will quickly learn the boundaries of its home area.

Whichever invisible dog fence that you choose, remember to base your choice on your dog’s level of fear, pain threshold, training ability and temperament.  Through training exercises, you can gently introduce your dog to the invisible fence and have success at confining your pet to its home area.  With care and proper attention, invisible pet fences can work for you.
